How do I make text in photoshop transparent like the background is?

-I am working on a logo that will be printed on a bag, and I totally forgot how to make my text transparent, as in that the bags color would come through it. I am not just talking about making it an Outline. I have the text layered over a white box and I want the text to burn through the white box and be transparent so the bag's color will come through the text. Does that make sense?
